During our trip to Ushuaia, my sister and I embarked on an unforgettable experience: navigating the legendary Beagle Channel. This narrow strait, which separates Argentina from Chile, is known for its stunning landscapes and rich biodiversity.

Departure Point: Ushuaia Tourist Port

Our journey began at the Ushuaia Tourist Port, located on Avenida Maipú, right in the heart of the city. This is the main departure point for catamarans and yachts that explore the Beagle Channel, offering travelers a front-row seat to the natural wonders of the region.

First Stop: Nature Walk on Bridges Island

Our first stop was the really highlight of the tour, it was the Bridges Island, one of the few islands in the Beagle Channel where passengers are allowed to disembark. Here, we took a guided hike lasting almost two hours. Along the way, we discovered the local flora and fauna, learned about the indigenous Yámana people, and visited ancient shell middens left by their communities. The views from the island were amazing and I think one of the best views I had in the entire trip. I will show you some of them here:

Sea Lions Sighting: Sea Lion Island (Isla de los Lobos)

Next, we sailed toward Sea Lion Island, home to both one- and two-haired sea lions. These fascinating animals were lounging on the rocks, putting on an incredible show for everyone on board.

The dynamics within a sea lion colony are fascinating. A typical colony consists of many females and just a few males. The largest male, known as the alpha or dominant bull, commands attention immediately. With his massive size, thick mane, and deep vocalizations, he clearly stood out among the others.

Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse: The Guardian of the Channel

To finish the excursion we went to Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse—often nicknamed the “Lighthouse at the End of the World.” Built in 1918, the 11-meter-tall lighthouse is still operational today, casting its beam every ten seconds with a range of up to 13 kilometers. Perched on a rocky islet, the lighthouse is one of Ushuaia’s most iconic landmarks, symbolizing the harmony between man and nature at the southernmost edge of the world.

As you can see I seemed very happy, and yes I really was. The place was beutiful and I felt very connected with the nature. This is a must do activity if you ever visit Ushuaia.

Thanks for reading! Let me know if one day you visit there! Let's share travel stories!
